The Basics Of Fuel And Trip Permits

If you are new to trucking, you will soon find out that there can be a lot of red tape. Each state has different requirements for who can haul within their boundaries. Within the states in which you regularly haul, you should have fuel and registration credentials. These credentials can be a hassle to get, some with a cringe-worthy price tag. Instead of getting permanent permits for every state you may drive through, there are temporary fuel permits that make the process significantly easier.

There are several different types of these temporary permits, all of which come in handy for specific hauls.

Fuel Permits

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a type of credential that each driver must have. It is basically an agreement where any taxes paid on fuel for trucking is credited back to the person holding the permit. It is required in almost every state, which is where fuel permits come into function. If you do not have an IFTA permit for Kansas, for example, you can pay a small fee and receive one before you need to haul through the state. This way you are covered legally without having to be credentialed for the year.

Trip Permits

Trip permits serve as a temporary vehicle registration. Similar to an IFTA permit,  carriers are required to have an International Registration Plan (IRP) Permit. In states where a carrier does not have this permit, they should apply for a temporary trip permit, which would cover them while they are visiting the state. Failure to do so may leave them in trouble with the law.

Dual Permits

Since most carriers will be going through states where both a fuel and a trip permit is necessary, there is a way to file for a dual permit. Dual permits allow carriers to pay a reduced fee and get both permits in one fell swoop. It is much easier to get both permits at once instead of having to fill out the paperwork for both separately.

In conclusion, it is super important that you have the proper credentials for the state you are hauling in. There are several credible agencies online who can sign off on these permits. You should make sure to have them with you before making your haul. Attempting to go without the proper permits would likely leave you high and dry in a world of hurt. Don't play chicken with the law. Get your trip and fuel permits!
