Tips For Transporting A Motorcycle

It's not always possible or desirable to ride your motorcycle to its destination. This is especially true if you are transporting for a special event or a move, or if you need to move a specialty motorcycle like a dirt bike. In this case, you need to know the proper way to haul a bike. The following a few tips for doing this correctly so you don't have to worry about damage

Use a ramp

It doesn't matter if you are hauling on a trailer, in a toy hauler, or in the bed of a pickup -- you need a ramp. Don't attempt to lift the bike onto the transport vehicle, as this increases the likelihood of damage to the bike or injury to yourself. A motorcycle ramp that is designed to hook securely onto the transport vehicle is the best option, particularly if you will be loading and unloading the bike alone. You can also use a board cut to size, but you must devise a method to tie it down to the transport vehicle so it doesn't slide out of place when you are loading your motorcycle

Invest in wheel chocks and straps

When using a vehicle not specifically designed for motorcycle transport, you will need to invest in wheel chocks. These are mounted to the deck or bed of the transport vehicle. The wheel sits inside the chock, which holds the bike upright and unmoving. A motorcycle trailer will come pre-equipped with the proper chocks and tie down points. If you use a pickup or all-purpose trailer, you will need to have chocks mounted to the deck or frame. The straps should attach to the front of the bike, not to the ends of the handlebar or to the fork. Soft ties won't scratch or damage the bike. Make sure straps are properly tightened so the bike is held upright.

Keep bikes upright

Finally, never lay bikes on their side or lean them against each other for transport. If you must transport multiple bikes, then choose a vehicle that is designed to so this. You can install multiple chocks in a pickup or trailer, as long as there is enough space between the bikes so that they won't touch during transport. A better option is to invest in a double wide motorcycle trailer that is already equipped with the proper tie-down locations for multiple bikes.
