3 Tips For Stress-Free Airport Experiences With A Toddler When Traveling As A Single Parent

The airport is a necessary place to wade through if you plan to take a plane as a means of travel on your next trip, but unfortunately, airports can be not-so-toddler friendly. From bustling crowds and heightened security to the massive size of the place, getting through this place and avoiding a meltdown (either the toddler's or your own) can sometimes be a challenge, especially if you have no help with you. No matter how much time you spend preparing for the actual flight and trip, sometimes a hangup at the airport can throw a damper on your plans. To make sure you get through the task of actually getting to your flight on time with a toddler, there are three simple tips to keep in mind.

Invest in a toddler leash before you go.

While you are checking in for your flight or getting through the airport security check points, the last thing you want is to lose track of your energy-filled toddler. It only takes a few minutes for a little one to slip away and get lost. Invest in an inexpensive child-safety leash or harness that clips to your child's backpack. You can keep your toddler nearby even if you are doing something that distracts your attention for a few minutes.

Consider getting a ride to the airport instead of driving.

Most airports do offer long-term parking where you can leave yoru vehicle until you get back, but just getting your vehicle into the parking garage and then having to make the trip to the actual airport with a toddler, your luggage, and your personal belongings in tow can prove to be a challenge if you are traveling alone. Instead, ask a friend or family member to give you a ride so you can simply be dropped off at the entrance.

Give your anxious little one his or her own responsibilities as you make your way to the plane.

Even younger children are capable of small tasks that can ease your burden  just a bit when traveling on your own. Therefore, before you head to the airport, assign your little one some responsibility. This can be something as simple as allowing them to be in charge of their own carry-on bag or small rolling suitcase. With a little assigned responsibility, your toddler will feel a little more inclined to follow direction and get to your plane's boarding area in a timely manner.
