Meeting Your Customers’ Needs

Types Of Trucking Services

If you are looking into being a trucker, you need to consider what type of trucking you want to do. A commercial driver's license will give you the legal ability to drive a big rig truck, but that does not mean you are prepared to drive any truck on any job. Some jobs require specialized training. The more types of jobs you are qualified to do, the better positioned you are to make money for yourself or for your family.

Asphalt Trucking

There are always paving jobs because there are always new roads and neighborhoods being built or old roads that need to be refinished. One of the challenges when handling asphalt is that it is very sticky. If you do not properly maintain your truck, the asphalt can build up layer after layer until the hauling capacity of your truck is diminished. Also, unloading a load of asphalt into a paver requires precise driving and synchronization. The best way to gain experience with asphalt hauling is to work on construction jobs, so once you get your foot in the door, you can get other jobs paving jobs.

Riggers

Some equipment can easily be moved with nothing more than a regular semi truck. There are, however, some pieces of equipment that weigh multiple tons. Moving a very large piece of equipment requires specialized skill and training. Riggers are the people responsible for moving large pieces of equipment. In some cases, more than one truck driver will have to drive a rig in tandem, which means that drivers need to be able to work in unison with another driver.

Hazardous Materials

If you haul a potentially hazardous material, you have to get special training to make sure that you don't create a disaster. Because handling hazardous materials is dangerous, companies will pay good money for a driver who is qualified to safely handle hazardous materials. While you might have to pay a little extra money to gain the necessary training, it can be worth it in the end.

Trucking can pay good money. Hauling packages is a good start in the trucking business, but if you want to increase your worth to potential employers and make yourself more desirable at the same time, you need to expand your range. Getting hazmat training is a step in the right direction. The more you do to increase your skills, the more jobs you take on, and the more money you can make.
