Meeting Your Customers’ Needs

Cab Ride Do's And Don'ts

If you're in the city and need to catch a cab, you're among hundreds, if not thousands, of others looking to do the same thing. Once you've managed to hail a cab and get inside, there are several things you should do, as well as several things you shouldn't do, to ensure the ride goes smoothly and everyone is happy.

Do's

Here are things everyone should do when they ride in a taxi cab:

  • Always be sober, and if you're not, do your best to remain quiet and polite even if your inner drunkard is fighting to escape.
  • Say hello to your cab driver and tell them immediately where you're heading. An exact address really helps, but if you don't have the address, at least the name of the building or the cross street will be very helpful.
  • Be patient while riding in a cab. It's not the driver's fault if you're caught in rush hour traffic or there is an accident.
  • You can make small talk if you choose, but if the driver is not in the mood to chat, it's best to just stay silent until you reach your destination.
  • Always thank your driver when you get to where you're going, and leave a good tip.
  • Know your rights as a rider. You are entitled to a smoke-free cab, polite service, and a safe arrival, among other things.

Don'ts

Of course, there are also some things you should not do when you're hitching a cab ride:

  • Do not be a backseat driver. If you don't like the way the cab driver is driving, simply ask them to let you out early, or just let them drive their way.
  • When you're hailing a cab, don't jump out into traffic. In most cases, the driver will ignore you and move on.
  • Don't take forever to get into the cab and load your stuff. Remember, time is money for the driver.
  • Do not be rude, swear, act belligerent, or attempt to argue with your driver.
  • Don't get offended if your cabbie does not like the fact that you're paying with a credit card. Remember, credit cards charge the taxi driver a fee, and some cabs have not yet integrated a more modern system of taking credit card payments.
  • Do not "get busy" with your significant other while in the back of a cab.
  • Never light up a cigarette while riding in a cab.
